The Jewel Orchid (Ludisia Discolor) is a unique houseplant that we carry here at Flora/Fauna.  It is native to the forest floors of Southeast Asia.  It is a simple and easy indoor plant to take care of. 

Is a Jewel Orchid a real orchid?

The Jewel Orchid is a real orchid, it is often confused as such as it is grown for it's foliage and not generally for it's flowers.   They are also terrestial, growing on the ground unlike other orchids.   

Are jewel orchids hard to care for?

The ideal light conditions for Jewel orchid is low to medium diffused light.   These plants can tolerate very low light levels.  It is recommended to not put them in direct sunlight, as that can burn the leaves.  

 How often do jewel orchids bloom?

 White flower spikes bloom during the fall, winter, and early spring.

How do I get jewel orchids to bloom? 

If you maintain indirect light and water appropriately your Jewel orchid will begin to make flower buds.  If you notice these buds forming, its a good time to feed it with a liquid form of potassium.  This will encourage more blooms that also bigger and with a longer flowering time.
