Staghorn Fern

(Platycerium Bifercatum)

Platycerium bifurcatum is an epiphytic fern renowned for its distinctive and unique fronds, resembling the antlers of a stag, hence its common name, Staghorn Fern. Native to Australia, Southeast Asia, and the eastern Pacific, this captivating fern has gained popularity as both a decorative houseplant and an outdoor ornamental.

The plant is characterized by two distinct types of fronds: sterile shield fronds and fertile antler fronds. The sterile shield fronds are flat, round structures that anchor the fern to its substrate, often resembling the shape of a stag's head. These fronds are covered with a layer of brown, felt-like hairs, providing a rustic and intriguing appearance.

The fertile antler fronds, on the other hand, grow outward and upward, showcasing a branching structure that resembles the antlers of a deer. These fronds bear spores, contributing to the fern's reproductive process. The overall growth pattern of Platycerium bifurcatum makes it a visually striking and sought-after plant for enthusiasts.

Staghorn Fern Care

  • Water: Maintain evenly moist but not soggy soil.

  • Notes:  prefer moderate to high humidity levels.

  • Fertilizer: To feed your Staghorn Fern, use a balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer at half strength every watering. This helps the plant get enough nutrients to continue to grow its impressive fronds!
